Spring Term 2018 - 19
Christmas seems a very long way away now! I hope 2019 has started well for you. The children are again working very hard and should be very proud if themselves.
Below is some information that might be useful as we start the new term:
PE: This half term our PE is dominated by swimming on a Tuesday afternoon. We are very proud of how the children are getting on in these lessons and how organised they have been in remembering their kit. Keep it up Year 4 / 5 - the swimming coaches have also mentioned how pleased they are.
Homework: In addition to ongoing, regular reading and times table practice, as a general rule, homework will be set on a Thursday or Friday to be returned by the following Wednesday. It will usually consist of a maths task, an English task and one other piece of work. From time to time this may vary so please do check your children’s bags.
Homework is a valuable opportunity to give you an insight into what we are covering in class and gives your child chance to review and revise what they have learnt at their own pace. Importantly, it provides your child with the opportunity to take some responsibility for organising their time and learning and to develop independence. I encourage the children to look at their homework as soon after it is set as possible. This gives them chance to ask for support in school if necessary and minimises the likelihood of last minute stress at home!
Music: We are very pleased that, with support from Love Music Trust, we have been able to arrange for year 4 and year 5 to take part in the Love Music Trust scheme. All the children have now been allocated a brass or percussion instrument to use for the year. The children are taught as a year group band by a specialist music tutor on Thursday afternoons. Please help your child to remember their instrument on Thursday mornings as we do not usually have spares in school. In order for your child to make the most of this great opportunity, please encourage them to practise for 10 or 15 minutes a few times during the week.
English: In English this half term we will be studying Greek Myths. This links with our history topic about the Ancient Greeks
Maths: During this half term we will be focussing on multiplication and division. Children in year 5 are expected to work fluently with 6 and 7 digit numbers! We will also continue to focus on times tables – look out for the tasks and activities in the homework books.
Times Tables: This year, for the first time, Year 4 children will sit an external times table check. The check will take the form of an online assessment in the summer term. Fluency in times tables is already an important part of our maths curriculum and we will continue to work hard to ensure that your children are well prepared and confident in this area in advance of the check. Please look out for resources and activities in their homework books to support this.
Science: We are learning about Life Cycles this half term.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any problems or queries.
