Year 4/5 2018 - 2019
Welcome to year 4/5.
Class teacher: Mrs Topliss
Teaching Assistant: Mrs Loadwick
Please take afew minutes to complete our Assessment for Learning Pupil Questionnaire!
The survey provides you with the opportunity to give feedback on what’s happening in the classroom and to give a picture of practice across the school. Please click here to take the survey. Thank you!
I hope you have all enjoyed the summer break and are feeling ready for the new school year – welcome back!
Below is some information that might be useful as we start the new term:
PE: Children should have their outdoor and indoor PE kit in school every day. This half term our allocated PE slots are on Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning. On Thursday we will be supported by Little Sports coaches.
Homework: In addition to ongoing, regular reading and times table practice, as a general rule, homework will be set on a Thursday or Friday to be returned by the following Wednesday. It will usually consist of a maths task, an English task and one other piece of work. From time to time this may vary so please do check your children’s bags.
Homework is a valuable opportunity to give you an insight into what we are covering in class and gives your child chance to review and revise what they have learnt at their own pace. Importantly, it provides your child with the opportunity to take some responsibility for organising their time and learning and to develop independence. I encourage the children to look at their homework as soon after it is set as possible. This gives them chance to ask for support in school if necessary and minimises the likelihood of last minute stress at home!
Music: This year, year 5 will again take part in the Love Music Trust scheme. They will be allocated a brass or percussion instrument to use for the year. You will receive an insurance form and once this has been returned your child will be free to take the instrument home. The children will be taught as a year group band by a specialist music tutor on Thursday afternoons. Please help your child to remember their instrument on Thursday mornings as we do not usually have spares in school. In order for your child to make the most of this great opportunity, please encourage them to practise for 10 or 15 minutes a few times during the week.
English: In English this half term we will be basing our work around a book called ‘The Lost Thing’ by award winning author and illustrator, Shaun Tan. Our art work will also use this book as a focus.
Maths: During the first half term we will be focussing on place value. Children in year 5 are expected to work fluently with 6 and 7 digit numbers! We will also be focussing on times tables – look out for the tasks and activities in the homework books.
Times Tables: This year, for the first time, Year 4 children will sit an external times table check. The check will take the form of an online assessment in the summer term. Fluency in times tables is already an important part of our maths curriculum and we will continue to work hard to ensure that your children are well prepared and confident in this area in advance of the check. Please look out for resources and activities in their homework books to support this.
Science: To begin with, our topic will be forces – we will begin by making a simple model to help demonstrate the force of gravity – I would be grateful if during the first two weeks of term you could send in any empty kitchen roll tubes you may have.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any problems or queries.
